QUANTUM CONCEPTS

Beyond the various departures from classical particle behavior implicit in its wave-mechanical approach, the science of quantum physics imposes a number of other empirical postulates that appear to contradict traditional human experience, yet are necessary to accommodate experimental data. It is our position that these postulates are also indicative of basic human information acquisition and processing mechanisms and thus can provide further useful metaphors for representing them. Chief among these is the identification of a fundamental unit of quantization, called Planck’s constant and usually denoted by the symbol h, that appears in several crucial capacities. For example, it relates the wavelength of de Broglie’s matter waves, λ, to the associated particle momentum, p, in the form
